Thursday, July 27, 2006 What happens at Skateland We lost the last bout, again, to the Mobtown Mods, 82-87. Even though we lost, that puts us in third place on points (for those of you following along at home). Something was in the air that time around. There were so many fights between the Junkyard Dolls and the Speed regime that 5 skaters ended up being ejected from the game. The Night Terrors and Mods have reps for playing cleaner, more technical bouts, so no one got too out of hand. I did get my first "insubordination" penalty. I'm not too proud of it, but a ref pulled something so ridiculous that I was possessed by a demon, and the demon had a fine pair of lungs and an evocative vocabulary with lots of strong verbs. If you're going to really lose your temper to the point of incoherence, I recomend you arrange to do it in front of a really big audience. Next time I yell like that, I hope it's at the Hollywood Bowl and will be accompanied by acrobats and a pyrotechnics display. The band will play "The Stars and Stripes Forever," then the 1812 Overture. When they are done, that ref will still dead-ass wrong. In completely unrelated news, I recently re-quit smoking. It's probably dumb to try it before my big trip to Las Vegas tomorrow, but it's probably dumber not to try. It's been about a week and a half since I've had a cigarette at all. I'm already getting all self-righteous about it. It's kind of great. I love being self-righteous. posted by Frenz | 7/27/2006 05:15:00 PM 1 comments Wednesday, July 19, 2006 Charm City Roller Radio Check it out! Recaps of the first three bouts, interviews with skaters, and the incredible media skills of announcer Dirty Marty and Co-head Referee Justice Feelgood Marshall. Also, I'm on there, too, because I cried like Lucy Ricardo 'til Tracy let me be in the show. Podcast!!! The bout is this Sunday, Sunday, Sunday at Putty Hill Skateland. Tickets available at the touch of a button, or from the hand of real live human being at Killer Trash in Fells Point or Atomic Books in Hampden. posted by Frenz | 7/19/2006 05:04:00 PM 0 comments Sunday, July 16, 2006 Golden age This time last year, I was writing every day. Can you imagine? I can't. I can only remember, and that doesn't always make sense. I know I was convinced that no one in roller derby would ever like me or be my friend, but I was really excited, because I felt like I was getting good so fast. I was, too, but everyone else (just about) who stuck with it got good, too. Now I have a lot of derby friends, but I'm not the relative hotshot I once was. Don't get me wrong: I am still good. I feel like I have to try harder than ever, though. New girls keep crawling out of the woodwork and being amazing skaters--but they are shocked and their feelings are hurt when they fall (not all of them, but that's the feeling I get with a few)--and I know that my place on the team is not guaranteed after January if I can't keep my skills up. I'm working on it. I go to every single practice. The first one I missed since Tracy's car broke down on the way to one in March or something was a special Saturday practice that fell during my trip to see my family drive each other insane in the prescence of my sister's new baby. I go to a gym now, too, and I do things there that don't make any kind of sense, just trying to get my endurance up. Evidently, this is called "cardio". Stupid made-up Harry Potter word. "Cardio." Whatever. Sometimes, I pump iron, too, but I'm mainly trying to get fast. That's what I want. posted by Frenz | 7/16/2006 03:32:00 PM 1 comments Thursday, July 13, 2006 Do not cross Charm City Roller Girls ![]() It turns out I was blissfully wrong, and this is not the last bout at Skateland Putty Hill. We get to be there in August, as well. In September, we need to find another place. If you have a spare ballrooom, warehouse, basketball court, or airplane hangar, let me know, OK? Don't be shy. It is OK to brag about your ballroom. In other news: there is very little other news. I spend some of my time absorbed in derby minutia. It's just as exciting as taking the bus ever was, but I was pretty confident that the bus would never read my blog, and if it did, it wouldn't take offense at anything I said about it. The bus is a loving shepherd, although I wouldn't know, because I haven't taken it in months. See you in hell, you loving shepherd. The rest of my time I spend thrusting dollar bills into bar trivia machines, hoping to beat the high score on erotic photo hunt. If it's not that exactly, it's that in spirit: not much to blog about, although lots of fun to do. The group I've joined to shame me into writing met tonight. We sat in a park and communed with insects. I was suitably shamed, since I'm the asshole who contributed one page for the group's consideration. We decided to meet every month, and I can't wait for my August shaming. I can't wait for that July bout, either. Get in on it. posted by Frenz | 7/13/2006 11:01:00 PM 0 comments Wednesday, July 05, 2006 LOL J/K J/K: July bout to be held Sunday, July 23 as previously scheduled Ah, Skateland. Ah, humanity. It turns out that we can still have our July bout at Skateland Putty Hill. Life just got so much easier. So, that's Sunday, Sunday, Sunday July 23: Blind Rage. Nobody knows who they'll play, but finally, we know where we'll be playing at. Most likely, this will be our last Skateland bout, so come and bask in the disco lights one last time. posted by Frenz | 7/05/2006 03:24:00 PM 5 comments Tuesday, July 04, 2006 I've seen this movie Hey, babies. I haven't updated in a while because I've been stuck in all kinds of swamps, but here's one thing that's up: Skateland got sold out from under us, to a villainous parks and recreation department, who, as an organization, are going to twirl their moustaches and turn it into an indoor soccer arena. That means no more floor, and it means our bout schedule will probably have to change a little bit. This is not going to stop my friends and I from assembling a big crowd of people, putting on our skates, and knocking each other down! There's a chance that there'll be an 11th hour reprieve for July, and we'll get to have the bout on Sunday, July 23 at Skateland Putty Hill, just like we'd planned. If not, the bout's going to be the evening of Saturday, July 22 at the Freestate Arena in White Marsh. Freestate is out in go-kart and sketchy car-detailing establishment country, but it's convenient to 695 and 95, and it's right off 40, so you won't fall off the edge of the world, Columbus. You'll be fine. We'll all be fine. If enough people are interested, we may rent a school bus to ferry fans from Baltimore City out to the arena. Leave a comment if that sounds like you. It would be roughly ten or twelve dollars to get in on that, but you wouldn't have to worry about using the gas or about finding the place. I've been eating my heart out over this crap lately, but there's really no reason to, because like I said before, everything's going to be fine. posted by Frenz | 7/04/2006 03:32:00 PM 0 comments |
